The Chicago Park District's Junior Bear program gives 850 Chicago-area children ages 8-10 (pee wee) and 11-13 (varsity), from 20 citywide parks, the opportunity to play football. The varsity league's season culminates in this annual Mum Bowl championship under the lights at Soldier Field. The tradition of the Mum Bowl includes each football player presenting a family member with a Mum corsage at midfield, prior to kick off. During half-time, one Junior Bear will receive the Walter Payton Award that honors a player who not only exercises good sportsmanship, but is also an asset to his/her community. The mum ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by a 6:45 p.m. kickoff.
